Choosing The Right Headshot Photographer

 Choosing The Right Headshot Photographer

Finding the right photographer to do your headshots can be overwhelming. When choosing a headshot photographer it is important to do your research. Of course, referrals can be the easiest way to find the right photographer. If a friend of yours has a great headshot, ask them who took it. Chances are they would be happy that you noticed their awesome photo and would love to recommend the photographer that took it. But, if you don’t have a referral, than you become overwhelmed with the amount of photographers that offer headshots. How do you choose the right one? First of all, check out their websites (and don’t just look at the first one that comes up). Here are some tips:

  1. Do they specialize in headshots? Even if they come up under a search for “headshot photographer” that may not be their specialty. It’s important to choose someone who specializes in headshots because they will have to expertise and experience you are looking for. According to headshot photographer norman jaillet, they will understand flattering lighting, how to coach and direct you in front of the camera and how to make the process easy and fun. Different genres of photography require different skill sets and it is important that you choose someone that understands what you need.

  2. Do they have reviews or testimonials? Reviews can tell you a lot about what your experience will be like. If the photographer is easy to work with, knows what they are doing and does a great job the reviews will reflect that.

  3. Do you connect with them? The easiest way to get a great headshot is to have fun during your session. Connecting with your photographer is key. While doing your research, reach out and talk to they photographers on the phone to see you if connect or get along with them. Most photographers will meet up with you, free of charge. Make sure you take advantage of that offer to see if you are a good fit.

  4. Don’t Always Choose the Cheapest! I know it’s tempting to just go with the cheapest person you find. This isn’t always the smartest choice. If the photographer is cheaper than everyone else in the market, it’s usually because they are not experienced or they are not running a legitimate business. Your headshot is one of the most important investments you can make in yourself and your career. That’s not say you have to choose the most expensive person either, but it’s wise to find someone that is worth the money. You can find reasonable rates out there, just do your homework!
